Another Crazy Plot Bunny
See, I have this theory that Piandao only kept a small fragment of the meteorite for sentimental reasons and dumped the rest of it because he meant what he said when he told Sokka "We'll make a sword unlike any other in the world" meaning he had no intention of making another sword out of the meteorite. So this common plot device fic writers use where Piandao crafts another sword out of the rock for Sokka never really set well with me for this reason. I needed a way for Sokka to get his sword back without using this plot device.

And then I had a weird dream involving June and Mai. (Don't ask because I don't remember the details.) And when I woke up, it hit me.  Piandao hires June to track Sokka's sword down. He knows the region the sword was lost in and he can get a smell sample off of the crazy artwork that he kept of Sokka's. Sokka's scent is all over that masterpiece. Plus, he has that small piece of the meteorite in his foundry... All Nyla has to do is put the two smells together. Nyla also picks up on the scent of Sokka's boomerang, which is in the same region, and Toph's meteor bracelet, which is somewhere in the Fire Nation. I haven't seen Toph's bracelet since the first part of season 3. I need to figure out where it could have gone to.

RIP Boomerang and Space Sword
A friend of mine wrote a fic where Sokka just brought Toph (the earth-sensing metalbender) along to comb the area. He figured it wouldn't be hard to find two fragments of metal amongst all that bare, geologically similar rock. XD

Re: RIP Boomerang and Space Sword
That's a cute idea. I thought about using Toph but I would think that the metal that was lying around from all of those wasted airships would make looking for the sword like trying to find a needle in a hey stack. And then I didn't know how wide an area her sense covered at any given time and I didn't want to have to get into the mechanics of Toph Vision. (I probably think too much about this stuff.)

Re: RIP Boomerang and Space Sword
I think his thought was that, having the space bracelet, she'd be able to identify space metal more easily. Toph's pretty sharp, after all. ^_^
