First Person Narrative?
I love writing in the first person narrative, particularly first person present tense, and I love reading stories that use this narrative mode.  So I don't understand why writing in this mode is such a bad thing.  I've had a couple of betas call me out on it for a fic I published a couple of years ago.  I was going to rewrite the story in third person omniscient.  I was rereading it tonight.  I have to say, I still love the first person present POV.  I'm starting a new story and I'd really like everyone's thoughts on the matter so I can make an informed decision about POV and tense.

I don't think the first person is inherently bad at all. Lots of classics have been written in it. It's really a creative decision for which they can't challenge you.

You never hear people complaining about third person omniscient. Just by reading posts on writers.net's forums, I was under the impression that, even though a writer could make the choice to write first person present, that doesn't mean that they should.

For me, the think that makes or breaks 1st person is the character's voice. I have to be entertained by their narrative in a way I don't with third person. Additionally, 1st is SO overused in urban fantasy that if I find an UF with a first person narrator I automatically roll my eyes.

I can understand that sentiment. I don't read a lot of UF. I didn't realize it was an overused POV.

Take my word for it, it is. ^_^ It's gotten to the point where I kind of squee when i see UF NOT written in first person.

I believe you. :)

There's nothing wrong with 1st person in itself. I've seen some fanfiction writers step out of it in the middle of paragraphs, which is weird. But when it's done right it can be really great to read.

Some person on writers.net was talking about writing their novel in first person present, then going to third person, then back to first person. Not sure why someone would do that... I was sticking exclusively to first person present because I was basically writing the story as it was playing out in my head, hearing the different voices of each character as they told the story from their POV. It was like it was taking place in "real time". Maybe that's why my betas didn't like it...

First person isn't bad if it's done right.

That's what I tell myself every time I sit down to write my epic Appa/Momo romance from Hawky's POV.

Momo/Appa romance sounds awesome. I really want know what Hawky sees Momo climbing all over Appa means. :D

Pffff, yeah. But Hawky can see the future. I keep telling him not to spoil the ending for me and he's like "BITCH GO MAKE ME A SANDWICH!" D:
